Warm Coats, Big Smiles
First Lady Maria Lee Visits Cumberland Elementary School
Frosty mornings are on the way, and those days call for a cozy coat – especially one that comes with a smile or a high-five from Tennessee’s First Lady. Thanks to a partnership between Maria Lee’s Tennessee Serves initiative and Operation Warm, every student at Cumberland Elementary School was outfitted with a brand new coat!
The halls of Cumberland were filled with excitement as students, educators, and family members anxiously awaited the arrival of the special guests. The First Lady, Mayor Freddie O’Connell, and volunteers helped all 400-plus children find the perfect size and color for their new winter wear.
“This event was a true demonstration of what is possible when we work together,” said Gina Reid, Operation Warm program director. ‘We got to see firsthand that while providing coats is important and addresses a basic need, these events are about way more than a coat.Because we took action we created joy, built confidence, and ensured that every child at Cumberland Elementary has the option to be outside and active — and warm.”
For many families, the simple gift of a coat means one less thing to worry about. For students, it means more time outdoors, more comfort during recess, and a boost of confidence that shows up in the classroom too.
This isn’t the first time Maria Lee has supported MNPS. Last year, she and Tennessee Serves volunteers visited the DG PENCIL Box bringing in-demand school supplies, stocking the store, and assisting educators with shopping.
A heartfelt thank you to everyone who participated in this event. The warmth from this special day will last far beyond the winter months.
