Love of Reading at Thomas Edison Elementary

Sharing the Love of Reading at Thomas Edison Elementary School

Holiday cheer filled the halls and classrooms of Thomas Edison Elementary School during their Gift of Reading day. As the semester came to a close, more than 150 volunteers filled classrooms with stories, laughter and the magic of reading during the school’s Gift of Reading event – and 600 students headed into winter break with new books and big smiles.

Dr. Sonya Whitmore, Principal at Edison, launched this initiative to nurture a love of reading among her students. What began with kindergarten classes has now grown into a schoolwide celebration. This year, every student experienced the magic of storytelling thanks to special guest readers that included state representatives, judges, emergency responders, and PENCIL volunteers. Guests gifted the books to the class to be enjoyed year-round.

It was hard to tell who enjoyed the day more — the students, volunteers, or staff — as nearly everyone embraced the theme, The Grinch Who Stole Christmas, through festive décor, creative outfits, and of course, beloved books. Thanks to the enthusiasm of our volunteers, more than 600 students have a renewed excitement for books in their hearts.

Dr. Whitmore’s vision continues to inspire a lifelong love of reading at Edison. Volunteer opportunities like this take place throughout the school year, and we invite you to visit PENCIL Connect often to discover the many ways you can support and engage with Metro students.
